Willis Haviland Carrier: The Inventor of Modern Air Conditioning

Willis Haviland Carrier revolutionized the way we control indoor environments by inventing the first modern electrical air conditioning system in 1902. He recognized early on that climate control, comfort, and productivity would shape the value of air conditioning.

Born on November 26, 1876, in Angola, New York, Carrier earned his engineering degree from Cornell University in 1901. By 1911, he had developed the Rational Psychometric Formulae, a groundbreaking innovation that remains the foundation of all fundamental calculations in the air-conditioning industry.

In 1915, Carrier founded the Carrier Engineering Corporation, an independent American company that quickly became a leader in energy-efficient heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Today, Carrier® continues to set industry standards in manufacturing and distribution.

Carrier’s contributions were widely recognized. He received honorary doctorates from Lehigh University in 1935 and Alfred University in 1942. In 1985, he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame, and in 1998, Time magazine named him one of the “100 Most Influential People of the 20th Century.”
